Get Real: What It Truly Takes To Succeed Online
We are living in an age of instant gratification.
We want what we want, and we want it NOW.
It’s true there are some areas where we can get that, but online marketing is not one of them.
Yes, getting instant results sometimes seems possible. There are articles or videos that go viral. You’ve seen others doing launches that generate 5 or 6 figures in sales (or more). Those same people are telling you that you can get the same results in just a matter of months.
Wrong! Let me debunk these myths right now.
Instant Success Is An Illusion
First, content that goes viral, especially if it is a single viral piece, rarely has the impact that people think on the business or individual who posted it. It’s more like “15 seconds of fame” than a real tool for growth. Plus, it’s never the first piece of content someone posts that goes viral. They’ve usually created a lot of content to get the one that takes off.
Second, big launches are real. But small launches are a LOT more common. Those who are generating the big numbers usually have large e-mail lists and huge followings, which they built and nurtured over a long period of time.
But anyway, back to what I was saying…
Success online doesn’t happen overnight. It isn’t about instant gratification, or quick results. It is built through consistency.
Anyone who has “made it big” online will tell you that it took a lot of work, and often many years of building their platform before you even knew about them. They started small, just like everyone else, but they stuck with it.
And so can you.
I’m not trying to be a downer. In fact, I am extremely passionate about the opportunity that the internet gives us to share our message and reach a lot of people.
It’s an amazing, global gathering place, where anyone can find the people who believe in what they are doing and want to be a part of it, or just need their help. I love that.
But it isn’t about getting out there and making a big splash. The ocean of the internet is too big for that, at least for most of us.
Instead, it is about being there consistently and building your impact over time.
The Un-sexy Approach
I know this isn’t “sexy” in the same way that viral content and huge launches are. But it’s real, and because of that, I actually think it’s even more exciting. Consistency and growth force us to face ourselves in ways that are meaningful and challenging.
We can’t just skip past that part.
Consistency can be difficult. How about you? Do you struggle to stay consistent with your blog or your newsletter? What kinds of things get in your way?
What would it mean for your business if you published valuable content consistently for the next 6 months?
I’m out to make consistency sexy!
Not because it’s flashy, but because it works.
Now, the barriers to consistency are real. It’s easy to just think, “all I have to do is set a deadline and stick to it.” But not everyone is wired that way. Haven’t you tried that already?
There is more to it than that.
Consistency is something I work with my clients on all the time. It’s about building a habit. Making it a regular part of your life and work. In fact, this is one of the main reasons my clients work with me – to have the accountability they need to stay consistent!
Everyone is a little different when it comes to how you create content and stick to a habit. Check out this article to see three successful approaches to creating content consistently, and see which one is the best fit for you.

Now, it’s time to commit to a consistent content creation practice. What will your’s look like? Leave a comment and let me know.
