Beyond Planning – 4 Things To Do At This Time of Year
This time of year is a great time to step away and look at how things have changed and grown in the past year, and how we want them to develop in the future.
Unless, of course, you are a retailer in the midst of your busiest season!
The rest of us are also busy with holiday activities and extra things. However, it is important to use this time wisely. Otherwise June will be here before you know it and you may find that you are not on track to get where you want to go.
This time is a wonderful opportunity for reflection, preparation, creation, and connection, each of which play a role in setting the stage for a great year. (The first two are pretty common, but I think the second two are just as powerful if not more so!)
Looking back is important, and many of us don’t take the time to reflect as we press onto the next thing. Taking a moment to think about where you were and how far you have come can give you the sense of confidence and accomplishment you need to achieve even better results. Reviewing specific projects or experiences allows you to identify the successes and failures so that you can duplicate or avoid them in the future.
It’s not about living in the past, but learning and growing from it.
Planning, visioning, goal setting… these are all common practices at this time of year, and there is a plethora of information and advice about it. But once you have drawn up a plan or established a goal, there is another step. How can you prepare yourself to achieve it?
I’m not just talking about action steps. Those are important, too. But many times, especially with a big goal, the person you are right now is not the same person who will accomplish that goal. How will things around you change as a result of executing your plan? How will you have to change or grow in order to succeed? How can you start your own growth now in order to set yourself up for success?
As a Content Creation Coach, I believe in the power of creating things. This is a great time of year to spend a little time in a creative bubble. Perhaps there are things you need to create as part of your plan for the year. Maybe once you allow yourself the time and space to create, the ideas for your plans will flow from there.
At this time of year, there are plenty of things to create as well. What about a holiday card or gift to get your creative juices flowing?
Finally, what good are all of our plans and creations unless they facilitate great connections in our life? Is there someone you haven’t been in touch with for a while? Who do you want to have a better relationship with in the future? Family members, friends, colleagues, clients… Take the opportunity to reach out and reconnect.
This can truly be “the most wonderful time of the year” if you can step away from the hustle and bustle and take advantage of the opportunity to reflect, prepare, create and connect.
Which one speaks most clearly to you? How will you act on it as the year draws to a close?
